Andre Ochoa works between sculpture and drawing, each allowing for a different type of exploration. Through sculpture he examines his own sense of the world, broaches political and social issues, and engages in institutional critique. Taking objects as representations of certain social constructs, he modifies them with other material or alters them gesturally. The resulting sculptural works, with minimal intervention though a heavy dose of irony and sarcasm, question the initial meaning of the object. Alternately, in his drawings he connects to the self: depicting the movement of bodies, human emotion, and shadowy forms in constant flux. This more intuitive work, drawn in an impulsive and spontaneous way, is an expression of feelings that prompts greater connection with the present. All of the work, sculptural or drawn, makes a statement about his own experience of the complexities and absurdity of reality.
Andres is a Colombian artist and architect, with a BA in Architecture from Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá and a BA in Studio Arts from Concordia University in Montréal. Following many years as a construction project manager, he moved to Montréal to become a full-time artist. Art gave him a freedom and joy that was missing from the aggressive world of construction. His experiences traveling through Colombia—both as a professional and as a child in a military family—shaped his view of its reality. His work reflects that background. He has exhibited in Bogotá (Galería Elvira Moreno), at the VAV Gallery, and in student shows like Aporia.
