In this painting, Vancol is depicted with her grandmother, Philomène Joseph, affectionately known as Loulou to her family. Loulou left her homeland in the 1960s and now resides in New York. Through this image, Vancol alludes to the waters her grandmother crossed to secure a better life for her family. Despite the physical distance between them, visits are achievable with nothing more than a subway and a bus ride.
