Rosy Hanna‘s egg tempera paintings consider the mundanity and mystery of everyday life. Using various recognizable symbols and settings of cities–escalators, bridges, cars–Hanna first prompts and then disrupts an atmosphere of the familiar. In its distortions of perspective, scale, and narrative, alongside its slow development and traditional technique, Hanna’s practice explores the psychological impact of contemporary urban life. The uncanny nature of Hanna’s work asks the viewer to rethink assumptions of the permanence and logic of those structures we inhabit and uphold.
